INSTRUCTOR'S BIO
Joseph Spina, a lifelong resident of New Jersey, has always been a man who valued
hands-on work and the power of knowledge. Born and raised in the Garden State,
Joseph grew up in a family where strong values were paramount. His father served as a
Police Lieutenant in Cliffside Park, and his mother dedicated her time to their home. As
the eldest of three siblings, Joseph learned early on the importance of continuous
learning, a principle deeply instilled by his parents who believed that "knowledge
equates power" and that sharing that knowledge demonstrates true humility.
His practical inclinations led him to attend Paramus Satellite Technical High School
part-time, a decision that paved the way for his first job as an electrical apprentice with
College Electric around 1980. This early experience ignited a passion for the electrical
trade, and Joseph thrived in the company's environment that encouraged on-the-job
learning.
Over the following years, Joseph broadened his expertise by working with various non-
union electrical contractors, including Static Electric, JLC Electric, PT Electric, and
Iovino Electric. This diverse experience exposed him to the intricacies of residential,
commercial, and industrial electrical work, providing a well-rounded foundation for his
future career.
A significant milestone in Joseph's career came in 1994 when he was organized as an
A-Class Journeyman by IBEW Local Union 164 while working for Iovino Electric. As a
union member, he contributed his skills to numerous large-scale and high-profile
projects across New Jersey, including PSEG Substations,
Giants Stadium, Panasonic, Garden State Plaza
Mall, Bergen Town Center Mall, Riverside Square Mall, Newark Airport, the New Jersey
Turnpike, Hudson and Bergen Generating Station, an Amazon Warehouse, and the
impressive American Dream Mall. These experiences honed his technical abilities and
provided invaluable insights into complex electrical systems.
Throughout his years in the field, Joseph diligently worked towards achieving his goal of
becoming a New Jersey Electrical Contractor. Balancing family life and demanding work
schedules meant completing the three-part NJ Electrical Contractors Exam took time.
However, in 2009, he dedicated himself to the final portion and successfully passed,
realizing a long-held ambition.
That same year marked the inception of his own company, Spina Electric. As the owner
and operator, Joseph further developed his skills in managing projects of varying sizes
and complexities, encompassing both residential and commercial ventures. He also
gained crucial experience in the administrative aspects of running a successful
business.
After a fulfilling 29-year career as a Journeyman/Foreman, Joseph retired from active
field work as a union member. However, his commitment to the electrical trade and his
desire to share his extensive knowledge led him to establish Electrician's Masterclass, a
New Jersey-approved license exam preparation course. Through this venture, Joseph
dedicates his time to mentoring and guiding aspiring electricians as they prepare to
become NJ Licensed Electrical Contractors,
in conjunction with working as an instructor for a technical school.
Joseph Spina takes immense pride in being a NJ Licensed Electrical Contractor,
recognizing it as a vital and constantly evolving career essential to the fabric of modern
life. His journey, marked by a dedication to hands-on work, continuous learning, and a
passion for sharing his expertise, serves as an inspiring example within the electrical
industry.
